What is Breathwork?
Conscious-Connected Breathwork is a powerful holistic healing modality for profound healing.
Breathwork is an umbrella term used to describe the act of consciously controlling one’s breath using various different techniques. Breathwork is becoming increasingly popular in today’s world and is being recognized for its profound health benefits. Conscious-Connected Breathwork is a type of circular breath that is designed to elicit profound and altered states of conscious with the intention of deep healing and expansion. Of the various methods of Conscious-Connected Breath, the technique that I trained with is known as the Sacred Breath Method, developed by Kaya Leigh of the Sacred Breath Academy.
Through connecting with the Breath using the Sacred Breath Method, we embark on a journey into the depths of our Being. The SBM is holistic, trauma-informed, somatic-based, and parasympathetic-led, designed specifically to create safety in the body and work with our body’s physiology to initiate the Breathwork experience.
What sets the SBM apart from other Breathwork modalities is that it uses a nose inhale/mouth exhale, whereas most styles nowadays use a mouth inhale/exhale. By utilizing nose inhales in the Breathwork Journeys, we are able to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for creating relaxation and safety in the body’s somatic experience. In addition, the majority of the body’s natural healing capabilities take place while in a parasympathetic state, since our energy is able to be directed towards body restoration as opposed to the “fight or flight” response elicited by the sympathetic nervous system. As we deepen into the Breathwork Journey in a parasympathetic state, we are able to connect with our Inner Knowing, allowing us to process and release traumas and wounds in a way that promotes safety, leading us to greater levels of personal alignment with the Self.
Through connecting to our Breath in this way, we are doing deep physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing work. By willingly meeting what lives within, we are given the opportunity to rewrite our subconscious programs to be self-affirming and empowering. According to modern science, upwards of 95% of our daily thoughts, actions, and choices are made by our subconscious programming, with the vast majority of these programs being self-limiting or self-sabotaging. By utilizing the power of our Breath, we are able to access and explore these subconscious parts of ourselves where we are able to rewrite the programming to begin to support the life we truly desire to live.
Life is one Great Sacred Mirror. As the Hermetic principle states, “As above, so below. As within, so without. As the Universe, so the Soul.” What we perceive and experience in the world around us is a direct reflection of our inner landscape and our relationship to our self. Oftentimes, in doing deep inner work, our outer worlds change to reflect these new levels of insight and empowerment. In this way, when we take personal responsibility for our own lives and focus our attention and intention on healing ourselves and exploring the wonders of our inner world, the outer world around us begins to reflect these beneficial changes. This is what Ghandi was referring to when he said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Doing the inner work and accepting radical self-responsibility for all aspects of our lives is how we begin to change the world around us. It all starts from within.
Breathwork is, in my personal experience and the experiences of so many others, the most powerful and direct way of accessing and healing these inner layers, as well as empowering ourselves and embodying our authentic Self. I truly believe that Mother Nature provides us with everything we could ever need to live happy, healthy, abundant lives. In all my years of exploring the various ways Mother Nature heals and supports us, I find it so simple, yet so profound, that the Breath is the most powerful and direct example of this. It continually brings me to awe and I am in deep reverence for the power of the Breath to enact deep healing and alignment with the Higher Self.
